Launched in August 2012 by four Derbyshire businessmen, farmkit.com is an online auction site dedicated to selling farm equipment.
Established when the group became disillusioned with other online auction websites, farmkit.com operates a weekly auction with all lots online for six days. Items are listed on a Tuesday and bidding closes at 19:00 the following Monday.
The site is focused purely on farm machinery and has the added advantage of carrying out rigorous checks on items being listed to deter scammers.
Beeley farmers Pete Rowbotham and Jonathan Holmes came up with the idea to start the site, bringing technology entrepreneur Rik Grundy on boar to build the site and Will Donald to manage the operation. Six months on, the site is proving popular with both buyers and sellers and is close to paying back the groups initial investment in the project.
The site currently has about 650 registered users and the weekly auctions feature about 40-50 lots. The average sale price is about £10,000, but much more expensive items have also been sold.
Farmkit.com hopes to become the online marketplace for buying and selling farm machinery online for both individuals and dealers, and will soon launch classified advertisements in addition to the weekly auction.
Listing auction items on the site is free, with a commission of 2.5 per cent (capped at £500) charged on successful sales. There are no bidder fees.
