Woodford: Standpipe can’t freeze for year-round water

The Woodford R34 freezeless standpipe is now available in the UK from Basement And Drainage Systems Ltd of Thelwall, Cheshire.
The United States made unit offers immediate water flow even in sub-zero temperatures and can be used for many applications on the farm from filling sprayers to watering livestock.
The key to the R34 standpipe is that the shut-off valve is buried below the frost line when the unit is installed properly. This valve incorporates a drain hole that allows any water above the freeze line to escape in to escape so that it can’t freeze higher up the pipe. Any attachments should also be removed and drained during cold weather.
For UK conditions the bury depth of the valve is 2ft, with about 3ft of the standpipe above ground, although Woodford also makes models with bury depths up to 7ft for extremely cold climates.
The R34 standpipe’s features include:

  • All metal construction: ductile iron
  • Valve seat: permanent brass valve body with large hemispherical seating surface.
  • Operation: 90-degree handle lift for full on
  • Nozzle: 3/4-inch brass hose nozzle
  • Casing: 1-inch galvanized steel pipe
  • Operating rod: 3/8in steel
  • Adjustable pivot block: Provides easy and positive adjustment of the lever lock in tension
  • Tamperproof lock: Can be padlocked in closed position
