Krone: New-generation forage harvesters unveiled

Krone has launched the next generation of its Big X forage harvester with three models each offering more capacity and improved fuel efficiency, as well as a completely redesigned cab.
The original Big X 500, with its tried and tested technology and six-cylinder in-line engine is still available and completes the range.
The most significant development is a switch from the two-engine arrangement adopted in existing models to a single V12 MAN engine in the Big X 850 and 1100 machines and a smaller V8 MAN engine for the new 700 harvester.
The new engine features an innovative output management system that allows the operator to switch between road and field work, thus maximising the efficiency of the engine for the job in hand. To achieve this, MAN developed the engine with two power curves – Eco Power and X-Power. So, on the Big X V12 1100 the Eco setting pushes out 638hp while on X-Power its an impressive 1,034hp.
In road transport, the engine output allows the machines to travel at 40km/hr using the lowest possible fuel consumption rate.
Another highlight is the speed control system on the hydraulic-drive cooling fan, which is temperature controlled and brings further economy enhancements.
The Agritechnica 2009 award-winning VariStream crop flow system remains as a standard specification on Krone forage harvesters with six pre-compression rollers and a large 660mm and 800mm diameter chopping cylinder. The spring-loaded base beneath the chopping cylinder and behind the crop accelerator helps to minimise blockages even when the flow of crop is not uniform.
Users can choose between three different models of chopping cylinders with 20, 28 or 40 knives. A dedicated Biogas cylinder reduces fuel consumption by up to 16 per cent when producing short chops, while boosting throughput by up to 25 per cent at the same time.
The new cab design offers more space and better visibility for the operator. Higher build quality and improved suspension has reduced noise levels, while the climate control system and a mobile cool box further enhance operator comfort.
A unique Krone-developed joystick is also better for harvesting, while a mode selector button in the armrest switches engine power requirement from Eco Power to X-Power.
Prices for the new Big X forage harvesters are likely to be up to 20,000 euros more than existing models.
