Kverneland: 5087M triple mower has low power requirement

Kverneland has introduced a new triple plain mower, the 5087M, that needs just 110hp to drive it.
The disc-only mower offers an 8.75m cutting width from its butterfly rear frame that carries a pair of eight-disc 3.2m beds, while an eight-disc 2832F disc mower is carried on the tractor’s front linkage.
“It’s all about reducing the cost to cut,” Kverneland grass specialist Dan Crowe said. “Our 5087M delivers big mower output for those with modest tractor horsepower.
“The ability to knock down large acreages with a 110-150hp tractor has a genuine attraction for those looking to reduce costs. Compared to a similar mower conditioner system, the saving in power requirement and diesel consumption is huge.”
The butterfly rear frame has two mounting points for the rear cutting beds, allowing overlap to be tweaked to suit field conditions. This is particularly useful on sloping ground where a greater level of overlap eliminates the need for expensive and complex side-shift systems.
The mower beds are centre-suspended using a spring-based suspension system to allow easy adjustment of bed float. Reduced skid wear and better protection of grass stubbles are the key – the latter encouraging faster regrowth.
The bed fabrication is from two C-channels welded together for increased rigidity. Each gear sees pairs of gear teeth meshing together instead of just one tooth per gear offering smoother power transmission, less backlash and reduced torque loading on individual gear teeth, while the development of a curved tooth profile for each gear reduces noise levels.
