The new Golem grassland roller from Czechia-based SMS is claimed to be one of the largest and heaviest products of its type on the market, with a working width of 5.4m and a working weight of up to 11t. Thanks to a wide range of accessories, it can combine several operations and ensure comprehensive care of permanent grassland.
The company built its first grassland roller in 2005. That unit was a bare roller without accessories and other options, but in the 18 years since then, the machine has undergone several improvements and upgrades. Today, the Golem is offered in working widths of 3m (Golem 300) and 5.4m (Golem 540).
The 3m version has a single roller housed in a robust frame. The weight of this unit ranges from 2.5t to 4.5t. The 5.4m machine, however, has a three-part frame that is hydraulically folded and equipped with a total of three partially overlapping rollers each 1.95m wide. This machine weighs from 5.5t to 11t when fully equipped and filled with water filling.
Lifting the wings into the transport position on the Golem 540 is possible even with the rolls full of water. They are secured in position by an automatic lock and provide a transport width of 2.56m for road travel. The Golem 300 is also legal for road transport at 3m wide.
SMS recommends 60hp at the drawbar for the Golem 300 and 110hp for the Golem 540. The operating speed in the field for both rollers is from 6km/hr to 10km/hr, while road speeds of up to 30km/hr are possible thanks to transport wheels at the rear that lift out of the way when at work.
As standard, the machines are offered with 400mm (Golem 300) and 482mm (Golem 540) wide wheels and 15.5 inch (Golem 300) and 17 inch (Golem 550) rims. On request, 550mm wide flotation tyres on 22.5-inch diameter rims can be fitted to both models.
Perfect terrain following is achieved by loosely placing the wings on the machine frame of the Golem 540. This solution allows both diagonal and transverse copying, even at negative angles. The machine’s safety can be increased by using a slope brake on the middle roller of the Golem 540. The manufacturer recommends using this pneumatically operated drum brake in rough terrain.
The Golem rollers can be equipped with other options including a sowing attachment with hopper capacities from 120 to 300 litres. There are also hydraulically operated double-row harrows with fixed or flexible skids, and several types of blades, that can be mounted in front of the rollers.
