German manufacturer Weda Dammann & Westerkamp is now selling hygienic PVC pen walls and modules in a natural wooden look.

“Real wood has the disadvantage that dirt and bacteria settle in the fabric,” Weda development manager Ralf Meyer said. “With our new plastic boards in wooden look, on the other hand, high hygiene standards can be achieved quite easily because nothing sticks after cleaning.”

The wooden-look pen modules thus combine the best properties of both materials.

“The new wooden-look boards are very easy to assemble and, moreover, their surface is UV-resistant,” Mr Meyer added. “This makes the material ideal for open stables with outdoor runs. The additional costs, on the other hand, are low.”

The PVC pen walls have been developed especially for Weda and are available in individual, adaptable sizes. The company’s first project was to equip an organic farm at Bakum in Lower Saxony with the innovative wooden-look pens.

“The new material as well as the look fits perfectly into our unit,” farmer Angelika Balz said. “This is not least due to the fact that other components, such as the gates, are made of stainless steel. They, just like the pens, are also very easy to clean, so that our entire farm now meets the highest hygiene standards.”
