A new and improved version of Naïo Technologies’ robot, Ted, has been revealed prior to an autumn tour of French vineyards. The appearance of the machine has changed, but most importantly this version has undergone several technological and mechanical improvements in response to in-field requirements expressed by wine-growers.
On trial since July 2020 with long-standing development partners Maison Hennessy and Bernard Magrez, the changes will enhance user experience. Thanks to feedback provided by about 20 winegrowers that have used Ted for the past three years, a set of specifications was defined to help finalise the brand-new version, that’s now ready for mass production.
Ted is now equipped with a tool-holder in the middle, boasting a parallelogram lift. A wide array of mechanical tools can be hitched onto a multi-purpose pole, and two tools can be combined at the same time.
With its robust frame, increased engine power and speed ranging up to three miles/hour, its hauling capacity in sloped vineyards has been boosted – yet it still weighs much less than standard tractors and high-clearance machines. Ted’s new modular arches mean it can adapt to various vineyard types (for example, narrow or high vines).
“We’re delighted to launch this new version of Ted,” the company’s Marie-Luce Fournié said. “Naïo Technologies has always moved forwards side by side with its users, and makes a point of offering robots that meet practical needs.
“The improvements made to this new Ted version ensure more reliability, and mean this vineyard robot can be used as a truly autonomous tool.”
The concept and design of the platform were thought-out while maximising the machine’s safety features. New safety devices included slow Ted down as it approaches an obstacle, and halts it immediately if touched. A remote operational monitoring system has also been installed ensuring maximum security.
This new Ted version will be introduced to growers in October 2020 during a roadshow throughout France, when it will be stopping off at several vineyards The new model will be available for sale in 2021.
