Can-Am: ABS equipped ATVs can reach 105km/hr

The Can-Am ATV brand, built by Canada’s Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), has becomes the first to offer models equipped with the ABS (anti-lock braking system) technology.  The company’s 2018 Can-Am Outlander and Renegade models comply with the EU regulations and allow users to make no compromise on the performance and their riding experience.

Approved under the new European Union T3b category, these new ABS-equipped models can reach a maximum speed of 105 km/hr. Vehicles not equipped with ABS will be limited to 60km/hr.

The ABS technology installed on the new Can-Am Outlander and Renegade models was developed specifically for ATVs in partnership with Bosch, a pioneer in this field. To ensure that it performs optimally in the various uses of ATVs in Europe, it has been tested through a comprehensive engineering program that included more than 40,000km on a variety of surfaces, including mud, snow, tarmac, gravel and dirt.

The new ABS-equipped Outlander and Renegade models are said to answer the needs of all users.

“The ABS technology applied to Can-Am ATVs not only maintains stability when braking on slick surfaces, but gives consistent, predictable responsiveness by preventing wheel lockup on any terrain,” the brand’s director of engineering, Renald Plante, said. “Furthermore, in four-whel-drive mode and during acceleration, Can-Am’s ABS also detects loss of traction on the front tyres and compensates.

“Thanks to the brake torque control system, braking is applied to the slipping wheel, automatically transferring torque to the one with better grip until forward traction is restored. The system also uses drag torque control to manage engine braking and improve the vehicle stability off-throttle, preventing lockups on surfaces like ice.”

The new Can-Am ATV models equipped with the ABS technology will be available from January 2018 throughout the entire Can-Am European network. A range of Maverick Trail side-by-side vehicles equipped with ABS will also be introduced by BRP next year.
