John Deere: Sima Show Special Mention for first all-electric tractor

John Deere’s new SESAM (Sustainable Energy Supply for Agricultural Machinery) tractor is the agricultural industry’s first fully battery-powered tractor, and it’s been designed to provide all the operating functions and features of a standard tractor combined with the benefits of electrification.

The SESAM tractor is a fundamental component of John Deere’s vision of the energy autonomous farm of the future, and that visi ad technology as wo the company a Special Mentio from the innovation award judges at the 2017 Simma Show.

Besides its overall high efficiency, other benefits of the SESAM tractor include the potential use of farm-produced renewable energy, as well as enabling new farm business models through grid plug-in and bi-directional charging technology. These would allow farms of the future to provide electric power grid services in rural areas.

This prototype machine produces 175hp of continuous power and is based on the chassis from Mannheim’s 6R Series tractors. Two maintenance-free electric motors operate the slightly adapted DirectDrive transmission. In standard mode, one motor is used for the drivetrain and the other for the PTO and auxiliary systems. If necessary, both motors can be linked together in order to supply full power, either for transport or for PTO and hydraulic work.

The SESAM tractor is based on the chassis from Mannheim’s 6R Series tractors.

The speed range is from three to 50km/hr at full power. In addition, an exceptional driver experience is provided by the stepless transmission control, high torque at low speeds and maximum power of around 400hp.

There are no energy losses at all when the tractor is idling. The SESAM tractor system is emission free and runs at the lowest possible noise levels, which is a particular advantage when operating close to residential areas or when working at night.

Currently, one battery charge lasts for up to four operating hours in typical mixed mode operations or for around 35 miles of transport, while the charging time is about three hours. The battery is designed to last for 3,100 charging cycles.
