PFC: Silage additive agreement for greater applicator functionality

Users of the Harvest Tec moisture monitoring and automatic and manual additive applicator system, marketed in the UK by the Profitable Farming Company (PFC), will now be able to use their applicator systems to accurately apply acid-derived silage additive to round and large square baled silage.

Until now, the Harvest Tec system has only been approved for use with Baler’s Choice buffered propionic acid for use on hay and straw, however approval has now been extended to the use of Harvest Tec System Applicators for the application of the new ProMyr Silage Plus, which has recently been introduced to the UK by the Swedish manufacturer Perstorp.

The ability to now use their Harvest Tec system when baling silage, as well as hay and straw, will provide baler operators with far greater versatility and the ability to spread the purchase cost of the Harvest Tec system over a far greater number of bales, ensuring even quicker pay-back.

ProMyr Silage Plus is the first in a new generation of acid-derived silage additives to be launched in the UK by Perstorp, and as part of the approval will be available through PFC and their distributors. ProMyr Silage Plus has the advantage that it is also classified as a non-hazardous product and so is non-ADR for road transport, making it safe and easy to use and transport.

ProMyr Silage Plus uses the latest chemical technology and is a gas-forming additive of sodium propionate and sodium nitrate salts. Being gaseous forming, ProMyr Silage Plus is ideally suited for use with baled silage, as the gas will permeate through the bale, effectively killing bacteria and preventing the formation of mycotoxins and any other unwanted fermentation products, so will provide thorough protection. Because it includes sodium propionate, this also has the benefit that once the bale is opened, it will remain stable for longer, due to the preservative action of the propionate, which is the most effective preservative on the market.

ProMyr Silage Plus can be used across a wide range of conditions, which avoids many of the problems that can be associated with inoculants. This ensures that baler operators can forward buy ahead of the season, confident in the knowledge that they will be able to achieve optimum results despite the conditions at the time of baling.

The Harvest Tec Automatic Additive system is the most advanced baler additive applicator system on the market. Unlike other systems, a central component of the Harvest Tec system is its ability to accurately monitor both the throughput and the moisture content of the bale up to 72 per cent, to an accuracy of one per cent. Alternatively, the Electronic Manual system offers a cost effective solution to those who primary bale only wrapped products.

The throughput sensors guarantee that as the crop flow through the baler changes, or if the forward speed is increased, the optimum application rate for ProMyr Silage Plus of 3.0 lit/t will be accurately maintained. This will ensure that the application rate remains consistent throughout the bale, which will avoid any wastage and excess cost due to over-application, or the risk of feed quality being affected by under-application, which in turn will boost livestock intake rate.
