McCormick: X6L mechanical models launched

Three new McCormick tractors take on the mantle of the popular MTX as the lower-cost mechanical alternative to higher-spec models in the range.

The McCormick X6 “L” tractors come with a manual 18×18 speed transmission, a synchro shuttle, gear pump hydraulics and mechanical spool valves, which contrasts with the more sophisticated “electronic” specification of the McCormick X7.4 Pro Drive models in the range.

“The newcomers have much the same power outputs as our high-spec machines, ranging from 131hp to 176hp, but will suit operators who are happy with a simpler specification on a lower-priced tractor,” McCormick product specialist Paul Wade said. “Equipment levels start with a quite basic specification but can be built up with added features to suit different applications and preferences.”

Farmers running McCormick MTX tractors will find the newcomers compare favourably in a number of respects: there are four-cylinder rather than six-cylinder engines but they develop more power and torque while using less fuel; the three-point linkage has greater lift capacity; and there are more substantial brakes than on the MTX.

Kicking off the new range is the McCormick X6.460; its rated output of 131hp matches the MTX135, but the 4.5-litre FPT engine then goes on to develop up to 143hp as its full performance potential is exploited under heavy load.

Next up, the X6.470 has rated power of 150hp – equivalent to the best-selling MTX150 model – before the modern engine’s power bulge takes peak output to 163hp. Higher torque output enables the engine to ‘hang on’ longer in heavy draft situations.

The McCormick X6.480 then takes the new range way beyond MTX performance, with 170hp at rated speed, 176hp maximum, and torque output climbing to 700Nm at 1500rpm.

“With the optional semi-powershift transmission, the new models also have more gears than the MTX and are built to operate at a higher gross vehicle weight, so they can take heavier implements and more ballast if necessary,”Mr Wade added. “And with a wheelbase that’s just as long as the six-cylinder MTX, they will be very well suited to operating heavy mounted cultivators and combination drills.”

The new X6.460L offers a maximum 143hp.

Increased ground clearance, a tighter turning circle and multi-disc brakes (versus single-disc rear brakes on the MTX) complemented by integral front axle brakes are further plus points.

Transmission options start off with an 18×18 speed all-manual gearbox with synchro shuttle. Three-speed powershift can then be added to give on-the-go shifting, together with a fingertip operated electric shuttle.

A creep gearbox is optional for both transmissions for specialist equipment, although first gear is already lower than in the MTX’s gearbox.

Electronic linkage control is standard but the spool valves are all mechanical – three are installed as standard with two of them operated by a four-way joystick on the side console; another two are optional.

The interior of the McCormick X6L tractor’s four-post cabin is spacious, light and airy with large windows for clear visibility.

With total oil flow of 125 lit/min from a two-pump installation – 38 lit/min dedicated to steering, 87 lit/min for lift linkage and the remote valves – the open centre hydraulics system is more than a match in output terms for the MTX’s 109 lit/min closed centre system.

A generous 7,000kg rear linkage lift capacity – 400kg up on the MTX – is also part of the package, and a 3,500kg front linkage can be added. Ground-speed pto is an additional feature alongside engine-driven 540rpm and 1,000rpm speeds.

Completing the X6L package is a spacious four-post cab with a large glass area for good all-round visibility, air conditioning and an air suspension driver’s seat.

“Our high-spec X7.4 Pro Drive tractors have been met with very positive feedback from first users who recognise they are a big step forward for the McCormick range,” Mr Wade said. “But introducing the X6L range shows we haven’t forgotten users who still want a high performance tractor in a simple package.”

List prices start at £65,060 for a McCormick X6.460, with the powershift and electric shuttle option adding £2,600 or £3,138 with creep speeds.
