Revesby Estate in Lincolnshire, has become certified by the Woodsure Ready to Burn scheme – the UK’s only quality assurance scheme that provides recognised standards for pre-packed woodfuel products. The government-backed initiative guarantees that logs sold as woodfuel meet quality standards based on the moisture levels of the logs, as well as the source and size of the wood.
The estate completed a process of rigorous audits and fuel testing and is now one of only three suppliers in Lincolnshire to be awarded the Ready to Burn certification. In order to meet standards, Revesby has taken steps to ensure that its logs are naturally air dried to less than 20 per cent moisture content to provide optimum efficiency levels, as well as being uniformly cut to 20cm in length and no more than 15cm in diameter, giving a consistent calorific value.
Making sure woodfuel meets the size and moisture standards outlined by Woodsure is vital to ensure heating systems work at maximum safety levels and to avoid them getting blocked and causing damage.
“Poor quality fuel is one of the main causes of faults, chimney fires, air quality issues and breakdowns, so we’re very pleased to have been recognised by the Woodsure certification scheme,” the vice CEO at Revesby Estate, Peter Cartwright, said. “Customers can be assured that our logs are of the very best quality and we’re proud to have achieved Woodsure’s high standards.
“Burning wet wood is very inefficient and unsafe as it demands a lot of heat to boil off the water before the appliance can give out the proper level of heat. This in turn creates a lot of smoke which damages chimneys and blackens appliances, contributing to air pollution and increasing the risk of chimney fires.
“Dry wood that has been properly sourced and seasoned like ours will produce fewer particulates, more heat efficiency and less maintenance.
“Revesby’s wood never contains contaminants and is always produced to the correct moisture levels, ensuring it damages neither the environment or our customers’ heat appliances, as well as being significantly safer because chimneys are less likely to get blocked.”
The Woodsure certification scheme also requires that woodfuel is sourced from sustainably managed woodlands, where the trees that are cut down to make fuel are replaced, locking up more carbon.
Every box of logs purchased from the estate’s online shop comes from the Forestry Commission-approved, sustainably managed woodlands around the estate. A woodland management plan has been implemented in the area to protect and preserve the land for generations to come.
The plan includes a sustainability commitment which will help to secure a healthy, green environment long into the future. By selling logs from its felled trees, the estate is supporting the woodlands while committing to selling woodfuel that’s of a high quality, as well as being environmentally sensitive and sustainable.
