Bomford: New wider options for low-cost cultivation option

Originally introduced in the 1980s, the Dyna-Drive became one of the best-selling Bomford products and was well known throughout the world, due to its simplicity and low running costs, and many machines are still in use today.

The Dyna-Drive can be used for both primary and secondary cultivations. With farmers having to look at the cultural control of blackgrass as part of their overall control policy, because it’s non-PTO powered and quick and easy to use, the Dyna-Drive is ideal for use in this situation as it enables stale seedbeds to be quickly and cheaply created for the subsequent chemical control of blackgrass.

Where rotational ploughing is used, in intervening years by only cultivating the top few centimetres of soil, this ensures that weed seeds aren’t brought back up and newer seeds are kept close to the surface for quick germination and subsequent control.

Initially available in four working widths from 2.0m up to 5.0m, the new Dyna-Drive has a larger brother for 2016. The new folding models, soon to be available in 4.0m and 6.0m options, giving easier road transport, and even faster cultivation.

The tines on the ground-driven front rotor initially dig-in and lift the soil. The backward facing tines on the rear rotor, which is driven at three times the speed of the front rotor via a heavy-duty uprated Duplex drive chain, immersed in oil, then break-up and firm the soil to leave an even, fine tilth.

Because it’s not PTO-powered, the Dyna-Drive only has a power requirement of about 32hp/m, so can be used on a smaller, lighter tractor, that can be run at lower engine revs for improved fuel economy. Being ground driven, forward speed isn’t a limiting factor and the faster it’s operated, the better the results. Ideally the Dyna-Drive works best at forward speeds of more than 7mph and up to 10mph, and at these speeds a 4.0m Dyna-Drive will easily cover about 40ha/hour.

Aside from reduced operating costs, unlike conventional tined cultivators where the tine is in constant contact with the soil, so wear rates can be high, the tines on the Dyna-Drive are only in contact with the soil for 14 per cent of the time, so wear rates are far lower.

Prices for the new Dyna-Drive range start at £9,500 for the 2.0m model up to £20,500 for the current widest 5.0m version (correct at February 2016). Prices for the new folding models are available on request.
