Herefordshire-based Whittal Seeds is bringing farmers more seed to sow as it launches a new grass seed catalogue. The comprehensive free catalogue is now available to livestock and arable farmers across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Powys.
Whittal Seeds is an independent, farmer-owned and managed business specialising in the production and retailing of grass seed. The 2015 catalogue presents new mixtures using improved varieties – demonstrating benefits to yield, palatability, digestibility, ground cover and disease resistance. After rigorous trialling, testing and critique, Whittal Seeds is confident that its portfolio of seed mixtures will deliver high performance and productivity. The 2015 catalogue includes agricultural, equestrian and amenity grass seed mixtures – as well as cereal seeds, forage crops, green manure and cover crops.
Whittal Seeds, led by third-generation farmer Philip Whittal, is located west of Hereford at Bowling Green Farm. Since 1935 it have been growing grass seed and recent investment in a seed processing and packaging plant saw the business venture into direct retailing to farmers in 2011. Since then, the business has established a wealth of customers across Herefordshire and the surrounding counties. By overseeing the complete production process from seed growing, harvesting to blending and finally bagging, Whittal Seeds has control of every stage of the process to guarantee a high level of quality and service.
Understanding the performance characteristics of grass is critical to all grassland farmers. Whittal Seeds works with farmers to make informed decisions on the right seed mixture to suit a specific system and use. Spring reseeding is now high on the agenda for many farmers; or for a lower cost option, over-seeding should be carried out in March or April when existing sward has a slower growth rate.
“Grassland is an important element of livestock farming, and I’m a big advocate of the saying that ‘you get out what you put in’,” Mr Whittall said. “We can develop the right grass seed for you, taking into consideration your system, land and objectives to ensure that we can advise on the best seed to deliver the most productive results.
“Grazed grass is one of the most cost-effective forms of feed; therefore a well thought out reseeding programme is key at this time. Our new seed catalogue includes a variety of grass seed mixtures to suit a diverse range of uses, soil types and topography – as well as cereal seeds, forage, and root crops, green manure and cover crops.
