Comatra: Blue LED lamps highlight sprayer nozzle performance

Belgian manufacturer Comatra has developed a new blue LED light system that’s designed to make it easier to monitor the performance of sprayer nozzles when they’re being used at night.

Studies show there are many benefits of crop spraying at night. For example:
> there’s less wind and spray drift;
> chemicals evaporate more slowly in the dark;
> plants are less stressed in the dark; and
> some insects targeted by sprays only come out at night.

However, working in reduced light can lead to problems if blocked nozzles mean the effectiveness of the spray job is compromised.

The blue LEDs used by the Comatra system does a better job of illuminating the spray pattern than white light.

Accurate and proper sprayer boom illumination allows the nozzles and spray pattern to be monitored from the cab, and that’s what Comatra’s CMTXV10 blue LED light system has been designed to achieve. It not only ensures perfect illumination of the spraying equipment, but the use of blue LEDs provides a much higher contrasting light than a traditional white light or even a blue light lens.

Comatra says one lamp is enough to illuminate up to 24m (just two lights are required to illuminate a 48m boom), and that its system has a much lower investment cost, requires less installation time, and is much easier and quicker to clean compared to boom illumination systems with lights for individual nozzles.

The Comatra lamps are installed in the centre of the sprayer facing out along the boom. Each lamp can illuminate a section of boom up to 24m long.

Farmers in the UK can order the system directly from the Comatra in Belgium for 340 euros delivered – about £260 (prices correct at February 2015).
