Massey Ferguson: Neat and nimble 1700 Series compact tractors

Massey Ferguson strengthened its position in the compact tractor sector with the launch of two new models at the Eima Show, Bologna. The 46hp MF 1747 and 38hp MF 1740 are available with either a hydrostatic transmission and cab, or in platform versions with a manual transmission.

The new MF 1700 tractors replace the MF 1540 and MF 1547 models that gained an enviable reputation for performance and reliability in a range of agricultural and amenity work. With new features and improvements, the MF 1740 and MF 1747 will further enhance the strong reputation for reliability and ease of use.

“These neat and nimble tractors are purpose built for the sector and are packed with useful features that combine productivity and high performance with ease of use,” Massey Ferguson’s director of sales engineering and brand development, Campbell Scott, said.

“we have developed these versatile tractors to meet the exacting demands of agricultural, amenity and horticultural users, as well as providing versatile tractors for use by smaller farmers and growers. The tractors offer the power and transmission choice to excel in a wide range of work with the hydraulic flow and control to handle modern implements with ease.”

Hydrostatic versions of the 1700 Series come with an air-conditioned cab.

The MF 1747 is powered by the latest four-cylinder, 2.2-litre engine that delivers 46hp, while the MF 1740 is equipped with a turbocharged, 1.5-litre, three-cylinder that generates 38hp. Fuel tank capacity is 45 litres on the smaller model and 53 litres on the higher-powered tractor.

Both models come with a choice of either hydrostatic or mechanical transmissions. Developed specifically for these tractors, the advanced hydrostatic offers an infinite speed range to match all tasks and conditions to improve working quality.

This well proven transmission is controlled electrically and operated with a simple floor pedal and now boasts a left-hand shuttle lever. This provides simple, fingertip direction changes, which makes manoeuvring easy and increases productivity.

The hydrostatic transmission in both tractors offers three ranges, while a Hi/Low lever on the MF 1747 doubles the number of ranges up to six.

A new “cruise control” button allows operators to set the forward speed and then remove their feet from the pedal, with the speed maintained automatically. This improves comfort and offers better control, allowing operators to concentrate on the work quality and steering.

Operators can also adjust how quickly the transmission reacts with the “response’ system” that uses a simple knob to set the speed from fast to slow. A new “Max Speed” control allows operators to set the optimum maximum working speed for the job, without having to continually adjust the foot pedal position.

Alternatively, users can opt for a mechanical gearbox that provides 12 forward and 12 reverse speeds with Synchro reverse shuttle lever on the MF 1747 A and MF 1740 A models, which are both equipped with an operator platform as standard.

The MF 1700 Series tractors benefit from 75-lit/min hydraulic flow, that provides the capacity to operate modern implements with ease. Two spool valves are fitted as standard, along with a new joystick control lever, mounted conveniently at the front of the right console.

The high-capacity Category 1 three-point linkage offers a maximum lift of 1,400kg lift on both models, providing plenty of power to handle a wide range of mounted equipment.

The A models, with mechanical transmissions, benefit from full draft control, via top-link sensing, while the hydrostatic HC versions provide position control for lifting and lowering machines.

All the MF 1700 Series tractors benefit from a two-speed – 540/540E – independent PTO with a Soft-Start function that allows gentle take up of the drive. This provides progressive engagement, protecting the tractor and implement.

A mid-mounted PTO is fitted as standard on the MF 1700 Series HC tractors with hydrostatic transmissions; and is an option on the A models with mechanical gearbox.

The MF 1747 HC and MF 1740 HC tractors with hydrostatic transmissions are equipped with a spacious, comfortable two-door cab, which has air conditioning as standard. A semi-flat floor operators’ platform with full ROPS protection is fitted to the MF 1747 A and MF 1740 A models.

On all tractors the main controls are positioned for ease of use and accessibility, while the instrument panel provides complete and clear displays of all the information the driver needs. Colour-coded controls and switches are arranged neatly and in a logical order.

All the tractors now follow the familiar Massey Ferguson family style with pivoting bonnet and full road lighting.
