JCB: Upgrades for mid-range Fastrac

A new version of the JCB Fastrac 3000 series tractor with new transmission features and a number of other enhancements was launched at the 2014 Grassland & Muck event at Stoneleigh. The Fastrac 3200 Xtra and 3230 Xtra are powered by a 7.4-litre, six-cylinder engine as before, but with an upgraded emissions control package that now meets Euro Stage IV.
“Extensive field testing has proven that low fuel consumption continues to be a key benefit of the engine used to power these versatile tractors,” JCB Agriculture’s Edward Roach said. “But the Stage IV engine also has a lower idle speed of just 650 rpm, so operators will benefit from a further reduction in fuel consumption when the machine is idling.”
Power outputs are unchanged at 198hp for the 3200 Xtra when engaged on draft duties or when driving a PTO-driven implement such as a power harrow. The 3230 Xtra gets 230hp for these tasks. But for transport work, hauling a heavy trailer, tanker, spreader or trailed implement, engine power management makes up to 230hp available for the 3200 Xtra and 270hp for the 3230 Xtra. A unique feature of the JCB Fastrac power boost system is that operators can choose whether or not to use it.
“Transport power management on all other tractors engages automatically,” Mr Roach said. “That raises performance, but uses more fuel. With the JCB system, the operator can exploit the boost performance when towing a heavy load, but save fuel by disengaging boost for the less demanding empty return journey.”
As part of the Stage IV upgrade package, the Fastrac 3200 Xtra and 3230 Xtra also get some useful control function enhancements – and a new look, with distinctive yellow painted wheel rims and new Xtra decals on both sides of the cab roof.
A number of control enhancements are introduced for the JCB P-Tronic semi-powershift transmission, which is set up via the standard touch-screen display and operated using a seat-mounted, multi-function joystick. There are 24 forward speeds with six powershift steps in each of four ranges, and nine speeds in reverse; thanks to the Xtra Drive feature, the operator can stop the tractor and move off again using just the brake pedal.
The latest touch-screen control software further refines transmission operation, with new features such as dual start gears – useful for frequently changing conditions or loads – and a key-off memory for the cruise control making life easier for the operator.
Further improvements, resulting from JCB Agriculture’s positive response to operator feedback, include using rear fender-mounted control buttons to stop and start the power take-off and to obtain full oil flow through any one of the spool valves. Also, a speed limiter has been introduced to prevent driveline wear and tear when the differential lock is engaged, and there are additional mounting points for front implement attachment flexibility, together with a neater storage solution for the top link.
