Bomford: Added functionality for arm mowers

To enable operators of Bomford arm mowers to achieve greater versatility and productivity from their mowers outside of the main hedge-cutting season, the manufacturer already offers a range of different attachments, such as a weed brush and ditch cleaner. But at the Lamma show a new Pro Drill Head attachment was launched.
The Pro Drill Head – which can be used to power either a range of post hole borers or a tree stump planer – incorporates a heavy-duty hydraulic motor that can be used at oil flow rates ranging from just 60 lit/min up to 135 lit/min. This ensures that the unit is suitable for use with a wide range of Bomford arm mowers from the 4.7m reach Raven up to the top-of-the-range Eagle and Heron. Speeds range from 36rpm up to 81rpm, and a torque range of 2,133Nm up to a maximum of 6,931rpm ensures that there’s plenty of power for tough operating conditions.

Post hole augers
A range of six augers are available for use with the Pro Drill Head, ranging in diameter from 150-450mm. Where a longer reach is required 1.0m, 1.5m and 2.0m long extensions are also available.
Made from high-grade steel, each auger is fitted with shallow pitch flights for optimum cutting efficiency and to ensure that the spoil on the flights stays on the flights and is cleanly removed from the hole when lifting the auger.
The auger teeth are attached using a unique quick-locking system that not only ensures that teeth can be quickly and easily replaced, but also that teeth are not lost when the auger is reversed.
Compared to conventional linkage-mounted augers, the ability to use an arm mower, such as the Heron with its 9.3m maximum reach, as a post hole borer ensures greater productivity and accuracy. The reach and power of the arm mower also makes this ideal for use on difficult to access sites and that there is plenty of hydraulic power available when working in hard ground conditions.

Bomford’s new Pro Drill Head with stump planer attached.

Stump planer
As an alternative to the auger bit, the Pro Drill Head can also be used to power a 350mm-wide Stump Planer.
The Stump Planer can be used to remove stumps of any size, and works on the same principle as a wide drill bit. A screw pilot point pulls the planer into the stump allowing the planer blades to maintain an even, clean cut. The high torque of the Pro Drill Head ensures that high work rates can be achieved even when removing the hardest of stumps. The fact that the wood is shaved off makes this safe to use near buildings or confined spaces, but also means that cleaning up once the stump has been removed is quick and easy, unlike a conventional stump grinder where chips can be spread over a wide area.
The Pro Drill Head costs £4,200. Prices for the auger bits start at £500 for a 150mm diameter auger and the Stump Planer attachment costs £1,350 (prices correct at January 2014).
