New Holland’s flagship T8 Series conventional tractor range has been further enhanced with the introduction of the brand’s AutoCommand continuously variable transmission. The new range-topping T8.420 develops an impressive maximum 419hp with engine power management, making it the world’s most powerful continuously variable transmission tractor.
The six model T8 Series line-up features the T8.275 (273hp max); T8.300 (298hp); T8.330 (327hp); T8.360 (357hp); T8.390 (389hp); and T8.420 (419hp). They are all powered by the FPT Industrial Cursor 9 engine that’s Stage IIIB compliant.
“The T8 Auto Command will become the tractor of choice and the ultimate working tool for large scale cash crop farmers, hay and forage contractors, together with large dairies and transport intensive operations,” New Holland’s head of tractor and telehandler product management, Luca Mainardi, said. “With a longer wheelbase and even more power on tap, it is set to improve the T8’s already impressive all-round performance. Furthermore, it perfectly complements the existing full powershift model range.”
New Holland has tailored its Auto Command transmission for the T8 range to perfectly match its dimensions and usage profile. The Auto Command transmission uses intuitive force-based logic and is controlled via the ergonomic CommandGrip handle, identical to that found on T7 Auto Command models.
The four modes of operation – Auto, Cruise, PTO and Manual – provide the same flexibility to optimise task or fuel efficiency, and all transmission functions are grouped in one place for a smooth seamless application of power. If working in Auto mode, the operator simply selects the desired working speed and the Auto Command will adjust the engine speed and transmission settings to achieve the most efficient performance.

The T8 Auto Command features four points of optimised efficiency where the transmission drives through a full mechanical connection. These points have been engineered by design to correspond to the most frequently used operating speeds. Whether you need a speed for planting, tillage, baling or road transport, the T8 Auto Command can deliver. Available in 40km/hr Eco and 50km/hr options, customers can reach top speeds at lower engine revs if loads permit (1,400rpm and 1,725rpm respectively), ideal for businesses that undertake extensive transport activities.
All T8 Auto Command models benefit from an increased wheelbase, improving stability and traction. Units fitted with standard-duty rear axle are 500mm longer compared to equivalent current models, while the T8.420, fitted with the new heavy-duty five-inch bar axle, is 1,000mm longer compared to Ultra Command models. The wheelbase of 3,550mm is a full 14 per cent longer than the nearest competitor, yet T8 tractors still deliver staggering turning performance.
All T8 Auto Command models can be delivered with Group 49 rear tyres. If air volume and flotation is the requirement, 900/60R42 tires are offered, while for row crop use 480/95R50 tires provide a narrower but longer footprint. These are the largest rear tyres currently available in the market for high-powered tractors.
The long wheelbase and flexible ballasting options mean that the T8 offers ultimate in-field performance in high-speed cultivation tasks. The TerraLock traction management system ensures 100 per cent of the power is transmitted to the ground.
Terraglide front-axle suspension improves traction and enhances comfort by counteracting bouncing while lifting even the heaviest rear mounted equipment. Improved transient response maintains performance in demanding conditions. If you encounter an area of compaction, the engine will respond immediately for zero slowdown. Ground Speed Management ensures forward speed is always achieved at the lowest engine speed.
