Tyre maker Mitas showed its Super Flexion Tyre (SFT) for the first time in Europe at the 2013 Sima Show. The tyres are aimed at high-horsepower tractors with more than 180hp.
“Mitas’ SFT tyres compete with the Improved Flexion concept,” the company’s marketing and sales director,Andrew Mabin, said. “The SFT enables the flexibility of variable inflation pressure and optimal performance according to application. SFT is our response to the compromised performance of one-pressure-for-all Improved Flexion tyres. Original equipment manufacturers require each element of farm machinery to contribute to the overall performance, including tyres.
“Mitas SFT draws on the performance of Continental SVT farm tyres,” Mr Mabin added. “We have been successfully manufacturing Continental agricultural tyres under licence since 2004, and this new SFT concept will appeal to European original equipment manufacturers and farmers alike.”
The aim of the SFT is gentle ground handling, and the 900/60R42 tyre shown at Sima is said to exert a ground pressure that’s 33 per cent lower than an Improved Flexion tyre of the same size. The tyre on has a contact area of 4,800 square cm and nominal load of 8 tonnes.
The 900/60R42 tyre is currently the largest and heaviest Mitas farm tyre. It weighs 426kg and has a diameter of 2.15m, and its recommended inflation pressure spans from 0.8-2.8 bars depending on speed and load.
