Irish manufacturer RockFit Technologies Ltd has designed and is manufacturing the RockFit Plug & lighting System for use with agricultural trailers and implements. The product has been developed, managing director Steve O’Mara said, because the current parts that are available are sub-standard in quality and require replacement on average every 5-7 weeks.
“With the high volume of the seven-pin plug, PVC Cable and incandescent bulbs constantly out of working condition, this causes massive concern for road safety and the quality of the parts currently being used,” he added.
“We have taken the standard seven-pin plug and replaced the ABS plastic with a stainless steel 316 insert and aThermopolyethylene over-mould giving the unit complete corrosion proof, durability and flexibility,” he said. “The plug can now take 4.5t of pressure before it will distort the outside of the plug, but leaving the internal working completely functional.
“From the plug, we have replaced the ever–brittle PVC cable and replaced it with a silicon–based insulation that is resistant to moisture, UV, dirt, wear and tear, silage, and water (including salt water). The cable has a further layer of protection with steel wire armour throughout, which goes back to a completely watertight and submersible junction box where the unit is pre-wired for users and reduces the risk of human error when fitting.
“From the junction box there is more armoured cable that goes back to two LED lamps. These have a constant working life of 100,000 hours – roughly 10 years.”
The lamps have also had slight modification to them; instead of ABS plastic lenses, they are a resin filled, which again makes the units completely waterproof and submersible. The whole unit can be submersed under water, power-washed and driven over. Consequently, the system comes with a full 10–year replacement policy for non-functional aspects of the unit. If anything is damaged, individual components can be repalced as the system is completely modular.
Prices for the system start at 99 euros (correct at February 2013) for the standard system which is 6.5m (29.5ft). There’s also a 10.5m (41.5ft) unit. Both version are offered with and without side markers and can be manufactured to any configuration for trailer/implement manufacturers.
The unit can also have a pre-wired GPS Tracker that will give the user identification of the latitude, longitude, speed at which the unit is travellingand sat-nav routing to the unit if it is stolen.
