McCormick has outlined its new five-model range of six-cylinder X70 tractors from 150-232hp that will replace the company’s popular XTX and TTX Series from 2013.
The full line-up includes the X70.40 at 150hp (175hp with boost); X70.50 at 165hp (188hp); X70.60 at 175hp (203hp); X70.70 at 188hp (218hp); and X70.80 at 214hp (232hp). Boost power on X70.40 to X70.60 is available for transport and PTO work, while on the X70.70 and X70.80 it’s available for PTO operations only.
Powered by a leaner and greener version of the 6.7-litre McCormick BetaPower engine, built to the Italian tractor builder’s specification by FPT Industrial, the new X70 holds the prospect of lower fuel costs while also promising improved performance and productivity. The new models all feature a 32F/24R transmission – or 48F/40R with creep – that has eight powershift steps and electrictronic range shifting.
“The core features that make the current XTX and TTX tractors an increasingly popular choice for farmers and contractors will still be a part of the X70 Series,” said McCormick product specialist Paul Wade. “The XtraSpeed transmission with its eight powershift steps provides a very accessible choice of forward speeds, while the high-output hydraulics system provides a quick response to pressure and flow demands from all types of equipment.”
Engineering and design work on the new X70 Series has focused on the engine to deliver more performance while meeting latest emissions rules, and on the cab to provide operators with an even better place to work.
The X70.40, X70.50 and X70.60 will replace McCormick’s XTX tractors while the new X70.70 and the X70.80 models are equivalent to the current large-frame TTX tractors. All offer more power than the tractors they replace. These performance gains are partly the result of optimising the engine’s combustion process in a way that also minimises the production of particulate matter.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gases are now neutralised by a catalytic converter and a urea solution – AdBlue – that is stored in a reservoir built into the tractor’s moulded fuel tank, making it easy to top up when refilling with diesel.

In addition to the new engine, McCormick’s X70 Series tractors have an improved cab including a new roof assembly. With the heater and air-conditioning unit now housed to the rear of this panel, and controls conveniently mounted on the right-hand rear pillar, the operator enjoys more headroom than before.
The redesign also allows a roof window to be installed for the first time, which lets even more light into a cab that already provides a comfortable working environment. Its four-post construction means there are full-size door windows on both sides of the cab with no obstructions interrupting visibility.
Externally, the new X70 Series tractors are distinguished by new graphics on the bonnet and a more distinctive treatment for the integrated front and rear work lamps – they now have smart chrome-effect surrounds to make them stand out from the current style.
