Challenger: High-output RoGator 1396 for large area operators

The Challenger RoGator 1396 self-propelled sprayer, which made its European debut at Agritechnica 2012, provides large-scale operators with a proven package of features and technology that boost application accuracy and efficiency.
The RoGator 1396 has been developed in the USA to meet the needs of large-area farming. The winner of the prestigious CropLife Iron Product of the Year, the RG 1396 is designed specifically for high-output applications and operations in the most demanding conditions. It will particularly suit agribusinesses, contractors and large professional farms running farms of many thousands of hectares.
Powered by a Caterpillar engine, the RoGator 1396 offers a blend of high performance with optimum economy. The hydrostatic transmission with new reduction hubs delivers dependable four-wheel drive and gets more power to the ground, more efficiently.
The spraying system is based on a 4,920-litre capacity stainless steel tank with fast and easy-to-use filling station a wide choice of boom widths and convenient controls. The RoGator 1396 can also be fitted with a range of dry product applicators including the AirMax AMP1 Precision Spreader pneumatic system or New Leader spinning disc spreader.
“The RG 1396 is a large and versatile application vehicle that offers the ability to change between liquid and dry applications for multi-season use, which provides an increased return on the investment,” said Challenger’s Age Krug. “With technology upgrades like GPS AutoGuide and the AgCommand system it also offers the flexibility to suit a wide range of businesses and applications.”
The new RoGator’s drive system uses a hydraulic motor with separate gear reduction hubs on each wheel to deliver more power to the ground. Drive from the engine comes through a seven-speed gearbox to improve productivity by allowing operators to better match the speed range to the field conditions resulting in quicker acceleration and improved power management.
In first range the drive train distributes power equally between the front and rear wheels to deliver unmatched performance in tough, muddy field conditions. In second through to fourth ranges power distribution changes to a 40:60 ratio to eliminate wheel hop and increase overall field performance. Using separate hydraulic motors and gear hubs run cleaner which extends the life of hydrostatic components. The bottom line to the end user is lower cost of ownership with improved maintenance and serviceability.
The RoGator 1396’s cab is designed specifically for application use. A one-level walk-way offers easy, safe access on a corrugated surface, handrail and toe kick help maintain stable footing as operators enter through the wide door. The foldable ladder for entering the machine on the front has his lowest step only at 36cm, beating all the competition.
Inside operators are greeted by large windows on all four sides of the cab providing great all-round visibility, including down to the front tyres. This good view continues in transport with lower boom rests and good mirror placements providing unobstructed vision.
The pressurised cabin has three-stage filtration, which keeps the air virtually dust- and odour/chemical-free and the standard air-conditioning has HVAC automatic temperature control. Operators also benefit from a floating armrest console that contains all the field operation controls, floats with the seat and is fully adjustable.
This multifunction controller offers fingertip control of the boom, spray, foam marker and machine speed. At the front the RoGator Management Centre (RMC) screen displays engine and drive status as well as all critical liquid system operations, including wheel tracking, field lighting and foam marker.
The RoGator 1396 is designed to move quickly between different crops, crop heights, row widths and field conditions with a standard clearance of 1.30m.
The axles are infinitely adjustable to provide any track width between 3.00-3.86m and this is achieved easily, from the cab by selecting the page on the RMC display. It’s also possible to set the front and rear wheels at different row spacings, which can help reduce compaction and crop damage. The standard two-wheel steering RoGator offers an impressive 7.3m turning radius.
A bolted C channel flex-frame design keeps all four wheels in contact with the ground, even in the toughest field conditions. Heavy-duty cross members provide additional stability, which means a smoother ride for the operator and reduces stress on the equipment. This system is so stable that one wheel can lift as high as 1.2m while the other wheels still maintain contact with the ground.
Air suspension with an anti-roll system on the front and rear axles further improves the ride while enhancing boom stability. The front axle uses longitudinal A torque arms to prevent motion transfer to the chassis so it’s easier to hold row lines, which also makes turning easier and prevents rutting and crop damage.

The RoGator 1396 is available with booms from 30-36m.

The RoGator 1396 is equipped with a professional liquid system that features a 4,920-litre capacity tank, an easy-to-use reload station and a conveniently located rinse station. There is a choice of boom widths from 30-36m and stability of these RoGator booms are renowned as the industry benchmark. All the booms tilt above and below horizontal. This allows operators to make adjustments for varying terrain while keeping them at the correct spray height.
The plumbing is streamlined with no sharp corners and with variable hose sizes to maintain constant pressure across the booms. A multiple-filter system minimises nozzle clogging and wear, ensuring consistent, accurate application. Optional stainless steel plumbing features boom end caps that self-bleed air out of the boom plumbing for faster on/off spray recovery times.
This main filling station is conveniently located at eye level on the left side of the machine. It has colour-coded handles and is easy to operate. Optional high-volume pumps are also available. For operator comfort an extra fill port is fitted at the front, easy accessible and logic to drive to the filling point. This is giving the highest efficiency.
There is a choice of sprayer controllers. The Falcon VT, the most capable system, provides very fast processing times and offers optional AutoBoom and automatic boom height control. It controls the five-way nozzle body holders that allows the application of up to five different variable products and the system can handle huge amounts of data, prescription maps and records.
