Syngenta: Winsome fully approved for brewing use

Syngenta has welcomed the news that its winter malting barley variety Winsome has been promoted to Full Approval for brewing use on the recently-released Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) Approved List.
“With buoyant grain prices reported, malting barley could be very attractive to growers for planting for next harvest,” Syngenta cereal variety specialist Samantha Brooke said. “Having a new winter malting variety with full IBD approval for the autumn offers growers additional choice.
“Winsome was only launched this time last year. Full IBD Approval for brewing means it has now satisfied key quality criteria required by end users.
“Importantly for growers, Winsome also combines high yield with its high quality – having the joint top UK treated yield figure and the highest hot water extract figure among winter malting barley varieties on the HGCA Recommended List 2011/12.”
Mrs Brooke said it was also important that Winsome was practical to grow in many ways.
“It has resistance ratings of 8 and 7 respectively against the difficult diseases of Rhynchosporium and net blotch and is also early ripening,” she said. “Early harvesting helps to spread workloads and is a key reason why many growers include winter barley in their rotations.”
