Fendt: 828 Vario sets new fuel efficiency record

The 280hp, Fendt 828 Vario, already named the Tractor of the Year, has recorded the lowest ever fuel consumption in an independent PowerMix test carried out by the German DLG Test Centre. With its record figure of 245g/kWh, it sets a new benchmark for fuel efficiency, providing a 6.5% lead over the second best tractor.
“This record result translates into substantial savings for owners,” Fendt’s UK and Ireland sales manager, Richard Shelton, said. “At today’s diesel price, of about 69-70p, the Fendt 828 provides a significant £3.70/hr saving in fuel compared with its nearest rival. This figure also accounts for the cost of the AdBlue consumption, which was also recorded in the test.
“So a Fendt 828 working about 1,000hr/year will produce annual diesel savings of £3,700, or £11,100 over a three-year period. Remember, that includes the AdBlue cost and that 6.5% saving is compared with the next best Stage 3b emissions compliant tractor in the PowerMix test. We are comparing the latest, like-for-like tractors. The Fendt’s fuel efficiency is actually more than 18% better than the average fuel consumption recorded at the DLG, which is 301g/kWh.”
The result is the product of Fendt Efficient Technology, where the latest latest SCR engine technology with AdBlue exhaust treatment is combined with the productivity of the Fendt Vario continuously variable transmission.
The Fendt 828 Vario, in common with all models in the latest 822 to 828 Fendt Vario range, is powered by a Deutz, 6.06-litre engine with SCR technology that allows the copany’s engineers to set the engines for optimum efficiency without the need for additional cooling or mechanical devices.
The PowerMix test was developed by the DLG Test Centre as a dynamic way to measure fuel consumption while taking account of a wide range of parameters that represent common working conditions. Instead of testing just the engine, it takes an average of 12 different load cycles including draft, PTO and mixed applications including using the hydraulics. In this way the PowerMix test simulates the conditions the tractor will be working under when, for example, it will be ploughing, power harrowing, baling, cultivating or on haulage operations and other tasks.
The Fendt 828 Vario’s record PowerMix fuel consumption figure of 245g/kWh is a specific fuel consumption, which allows buyers to compare the efficiency of tractors regardless of their different powers. This means the Fendt 828 Vario takes the title of the most efficient tractor ever tested by the DLG, regardless of their engine size or power.
