Dairy Spares: Calf dehorner is quick, safe, effective and less stressful

Dairy Spares has launched the Horn’up, a unique battery-powered dehorning device for young calves. Dehorning takes just seven seconds and does not involve physical removal of the bud. The Horn’up is not only quick, effective and easy to use, but is also less stressful for the animal than traditional dehorning methods.
When switched on, the Horn’up reaches 700 degrees C within the first second, maintaining this temperature throughout the process via a temperature management system. With a fully charged battery, a minimum of 40 calves can be dehorned, with an expected battery life of 15,000 calves before it has to be replaced.
A key difference from other dehorning tools is that the Horn’up does not physically remove the horn bud. Instead, the blood vessels surrounding it are cauterised leaving the bud to die without the need to gouge it out, making the procedure less invasive. This technique is recommended for calves of less than 28 days of age; the younger, the better.
Once positioned firmly over the horn bud, the Horn’up is switched on and held still for 3-4 seconds before rotating 90 degrees to the left and right. Debudding takes only seven seconds, and the device beeps to signal completion.
The Horn’up dehorner costs £249+VAT.
