A mainstay of UK livestock farms’ silaging operations for many years, Pöttinger has launched an updated MEX VI forager for 2010.
The MEX range of forage harvesters might have celebrated its 40th birthday last year, but it has continued to enjoy an enduring appeal. Farms of a more traditional layout face limitations such as small field sizes with often narrow gateways and smaller silage clamps. For these units, a high-output self-propelled forager would be more than the farm and its resources could cope with. A trailed Pöttinger MEX VI forage harvester is a cost-effective way of these farms harvesting their own grass silage, while remaining in complete control of the process themselves.
A 1.9m wide pick up brings the grass in with robust double coil spring tines. From the pick-up, the large diameter auger channels the grass into the four feed rollers that, in turn, feed the material into the heart of the machine where a 1.22m diameter flywheel fitted with 10 knives takes care of the chopping.
Chop length can simply be altered by changing the intake feed roller speed allowing the desired chop length to be easily achieved. The huge amount of blow created by the flywheel delivers market-leading propulsion of the crop allowing efficient loading of the silage trailers, even in the heaviest of crops. The momentum behind the large flywheel ensures smooth constant operation even in lumpy uneven swaths ensuring a more constant fuel-efficient loading on the tractor.
Pöttinger’s unique Powerband drive system allows the MEX VI to be tailored to suit any horsepower between 100-220hp. This is achieved by selecting the appropriate pulley wheels and Powerband when ordering the harvester. And these can also be easily changed if the MEX VI should be sold on second-hand for use with a smaller/larger hp tractor.
The new 2010 model MEX VIs feature many new additions and enhancements that customers have been asking for. These include a hydraulically adjustable drawbar allowing the operator to effortlessly switch from road transport to harvesting position without leaving the cab.
There is also a revised, improved and extended chute as standard. This reaches to 4.26m, allowing side loading of the biggest silage trailers. To alleviate any problems with transport or storage, the chute has a manual latching system and hydraulic folding mechanism. This allows the chute to fold forward towards the drawbar, reducing overall harvester height to 2.95m.
Pöttinger has introduced a completely revised control system, with a much more compact in cab controller. The Pöttinger Direct Control allows fingertip control of all the machines hydraulic functions, including rotation of the chute and flap position. This compact unit also allows for operation on the reversing system which can be engaged under full load if a blockage should occur ahead of the feed rollers.
With a generation of experience behind it, and these operator-friendly improvements, the new generation of Pöttinger MEX VI looks set to remain the clear choice for those looking for consistent, efficient performance from a trailed forage harvester.
