McConnel: Next-generation reach mowers revealed

Taking centre stage at McConnel’s 2010 Open Days at the end of February, the PA6085 and PA6585T models heralded the next generation of reach mowers from the company and presented higher power, a higher specification bracket and three-point linkage mounted machines in a compact package designed and built for the professional user.
The PA6085 comes with a maximum reach of 6.0m and the PA6585T, with 1.2m of telescoping arm provides a reach of up to 6.5m.
As expected from a top-of-the-range professional machine, the standard specification is exceptionally high. To suit individual user preferences there is a choice of controls and both models are available as a standard fixed arm or up to 1.5m forward extension midcut; the PA6085 can also be specified in variable-forward-reach configuration.
Building on the success of the heavy-duty PA5600, 6400, 6500T, 7700T and 8000T series – which is highly regarded by contractors – McConnel has boosted the performance potential of the PA6085 and PA6585T by achieving significant reductions in weight, while increasing build strength, through the extensive use of Domex steel, which has twice the strength of conventional steel.
As a result, the new models are more compact, with a tidy main frame, a new lower profile tank design, and maintain the McConnel quality and durability expected from a professional machine.

Both models come as standard with a 1.2m flailhead, featuring a new soft-start rotor control. Drive is via an impressive independent 85hp hydraulic gear system that represents a substantial 30% power increase on previous models. Higher working pressures are achieved to maintain efficiency over the entire pressure range and operate well in all conditions.
The machines’ exceptional performance is further improved through the incorporation of a higher capacity oil cooler. To give more cooling, when the optional integrated blower is fitted, it is completely concealed within the machine and draws air in across the oil cooler before discharging it from the bottom right-hand side of the guards at a 45-degree angle towards the cutting area.
To eliminate damage to the power unit, a mechanical rocker stop allows full movement of the arms when they are in the working position, but flips up when the arms are folded into transport mode to prevent any excess movement. The stop can be adjusted to suit different makes of tractor.
Although the new design makes the PA6085 and PA6585T unmistakable, for easy identification the letters and figures denote specific aspects of the machine: PA6585T = PA (Power Arm); 65 (6.5m reach); 85 (85hp); T (telescopic).
Retail prices start from £32,000.
