Cousins of Emneth is one of the UK’s most respected manufacturers of cultivation kit. Its continued success is based largely on its refusal to rest on its laurels. If there is a need for a new design to meet changing farming practices, the company will commit the resources to develop kit worthy of the Cousins badge.
In recent years this has often meant bigger kit such as the XT Disc and Tine combination, the Precision Seedbed Harrow and Cousins’ latest hydraulically folding Contour rolls are up to 18m wide.
The rolls are available in 15.4m, 16.5m and 18m, working widths, all in seven-gang formats. The essential ingredient with any Cambridge roll is in-built weight, and Cousins’ new Contour models weigh more than 10t, making them the company’s heaviest and widest rolls ever. Moreover, the new seven-gang designs are fitted with a heavy duty hydraulic system for smooth folding and unfolding.
There is more to big rolls than weight alone. Confronted with large acreages, the tractor driver with a standard 6m or 8m roll is inclined to go as fast as possible to get the job done. Unfortunately, this is not the best way to achieve uniform results with good consolidation. It is much more effective to set a steady pace with a heavier, wider machine.
A growing number of farms have already upgraded from 6m to 12m machines, enabling twice as much rolling to be achieved each day. The new Contour models simply extend the principle for even greater benefits. The new working widths are also ideal for farms operating a system with 30m tramlines.
