McConnel has introduced what is believed to be the world’s largest production flailhead. With a working cutting width of 2m, the new flailhead dwarfs conventional 1.2m machines.
It has been specifically produced for large hedge-cutting contractors, the heavy professional sector and overseas markets.
According to McConnel’s design team, the latest addition to the existing flailhead range boosts operator output by a whopping 66% over a conventional 1.2m flailhead, which on large-scale application use, it is claimed, will deliver significant time and cost savings to the sector.
The ability to complete a full width hedge cut in one pass is regarded as one of the biggest advantages of the new machine, which could halve the time taken to complete such an operation.
For the first time, ultra high-strength Docol steel has been used in the fabrication of the flailhead. This hardened, high-carbon steel, gives a four-fold increase in strength over standard steel grades.
Incorporating a quad-drive system, the machine operates effectively at 65, 77 and 85hp
“This has been at the development stage following demand from the market for some time,” McConnel’s marketing manager, Wayne Brown, said. “Tractors are bigger and more powerful than ever and so the arrival of this flailhead was always just a matter of time.
“The introduction of the Docol steel also creates a far stronger and more durable machine, but without a restrictive increase in weight. The result is a bigger, more capable machine with a far greater increase in output that is able to withstand far more impact than existing machines on the market.”
