Lemken: Karat cultivators introduced to the UK

The new Karat cultivator from Lemken made its UK debut at Lamma 2009. Available on the Continent in limited numbers during 2008, it has replaced the Thorit range.

Like its predecessor, the new machine has three rows of tines, rear levelling discs, and a following roller, but offers a number of significant advantages over the outgoing model.
A new, symmetrical tine arrangement with increased spacing between rows (up to 28cm depending on model), has been incorporated into the design of the machine to improve the flow of straw providing a truly uniform mix of soil and straw. Shearbolt or auto-reset versions are available.
A key feature of the Karat cultivator is a new system of point/wing attachment. A unique quick-fit system allows the frog, complete with point and wings, to be quickly removed and replaced without tools.

This allows the user to stock two sets – one equipped for deep work with narrow points and no wings, the second equipped with wider points and wings for shallow work.

This option allows the user to quickly alter the working characteristics of the machine to ensure the entire soil profile is moved without risk of over-working the land, which might lead to soil damage and increased fuel consumption.

Semi-Mounted Models
Semi-mounted Karat models, benefit from many additional improvements over the Thorit models they replace. A longer machine overall, but with wheels now mid-mounted, provides improved trash flow while maintaining manoeuvrability.

Transport wheels, and front depth control wheels, are hydraulically linked allowing the working depth to be set from the tractor seat. This might be particularly useful for people who want to set the machine slightly deeper for tramlines.
The new heavy-duty double packer, available on semi-mounted models, offers up to 330kg/m of packer weight through pressed steel rings.
In-line with Lemken’s policy of using the machine’s weight to help reduce tractor wheels-slip, Karat semi-mounted machines have a hydraulic weight transfer system to shift weight from the machine to the tractor’s rear wheels. This can increase output, reduce wheel-slip and reduce fuel consumption.
The Karat is fully available for 2009, with models ranging from 3m mounted to 6m semi-mounted. The 3m machine has a starting price of £4,508 without the packer/roller.
