Bailey Trailers has announced that all its grain and root models of more than 12t are to be fitted with commercial axles that will provide the 50% braking efficiency proposed by the EU, while smaller models can be fitted with the same as an optional extra.
“With faster tractors and more road haulage, demand for the high-performance axles has steadily increased to a point where it is now viable for us to fit them as standard on our top-selling trailers,” Michael Bailey told Farmers Guide.
EU proposals state that only trailers with the 50% braking efficiency should be allowed on the road, but some farmers have been reluctant to spend the extra £900 or so required to upgrade from agricultural axles that provide about 25% efficiency.
While air brakes are not fitted as standard, they can be added to the commercial axles at a later date as a bolt-on addition without compromising axle performance.
Bailey’s decision means that its customers will be ahead of proposed legislation.
