Valtra: New transmissions for mid-range tractors

Valtra is to extend its offering of N and T series tractors by introducing two new gearboxes. The company’s Direct models feature an innovative continuously variable transmission (CVT),while Versu models have a multi-step powershift transmission.
Designed and manufactured in-house by Agco’s Finland-based brand, the new transmissions have been designed around tried-and-tested Valtra components, such as the rear axle and shuttle, and are said to contain 90% common parts. Both the Versu and Direct models are claimed to be extremely simple to use and mean there is no gear lever in the already spacious cab.
The Direct’s stepless transmission is controlled by a lever on the armrest. The driver selects the gear range – A for ground-speed PTO or high pulling force applications; B for ground speeds between 0-18km/hr; C for general-purpose applications between 0-30km/hr; and D for ground speeds from 0-50km/hr – using the lever, the direction using the forward/reverse shuttle on the steering column and the ground speed using the throttle pedal. The engine speed can, of course, be set for PTO work, or allowed to regulate itself to get the best match of rpm and gear ratio of the work in hand.
This new CVT transmission is described as four CVTs in one and Valtra claims it has been optimised for efficiency and low fuel consumption. There are said to be an unequalled two efficiency peaks in each range, meaning there are eight sweet spots in total and a much better chance of finding the most efficient engine speed and gear ratio for any application.

The Versu’s new Powershift gearbox is built around the same five-speed transmission that is at the heart of the CVT, but it is driven using three buttons ergonomically situated on the driver’s armrest. One button selects the range required – A or B for field work or C and D for road applications – while the other two buttons allow the driver to change up or down the gears. A standard creeper box provides a further 10 gears below A range.
In work, the tractor can be driven using the gear change buttons, or by selecting an auto-change. Whichever is used, the driver (or tractor) can change up and down through the 10 ratios in A and B or C and D. The change from B to C has to be carried out manually using the range-change button, but can be undertaken while the tractor is moving.
Both Versu and Direct models are as fast and efficient working in reverse, using the brand’s TwinTrac reverse-drive systems, as they are working forwards. And, as with all Valtra tractors, the Versu and Direct models can also be operated in extremely cold Nordic conditions, since their transmissions are fully disengaged from the engine during start-up.
Valtra’s UK Sales Manager Mark Broom said that both new transmissions were an important step forward for the company
.
“The CVT gearbox in the Direct models is a major development, but the Versu’s Powershift will also impress,” he said. “The ratio change on the powershift is so smooth that it is likely to be attractive to customers that may have originally have set their sights on a CVT.
“These new transmissions also extend the offering to our N and T series customers. They can now choose from Direct, Versu, Advance, Hi-Tech and Classic models – along with all the options that are available with Valtra’s ‘a la carte’ ordering process – although we will probably see the Advance phased out in due course.”

Further refinements
Valtra’s traditional features have also been further refined and many additional features added on the new tractor models.
The base N122 model is powered by Agco Sisu Power’s (formerly SisuDiesel) 44 CWA engine, the N142 model by a 49 CWA-4V engine, T132-T172 models by 66 CTA-4V engines and T182-T202 models by 74 CTA-4V engines.
All these models have slightly more power and 5-17% more torque than the tractors they replace.
Torque rise has been increased considerably compared to earlier models, and all Versu models are also available with transport boost for additional power on roads, while the biggest models have Sigma Power for heavy PTO work.
The T162e Versu is a fuel-efficient EcoPower low-rpm model.
The new tractors come with load-sensing hydraulics as standard. The standard output is 115 lit/min, but a 151 lit/min pump is available for demanding implement combinations. The hydraulic and transmission oils are separate, but heat exchange occurs between the two oils, allowing the transmission oil to heat up the cold hydraulic oil, which in turn cools the hot transmission oil during road transport.
Heavy-duty linkages and an industrial front axle with brakes are available for demanding tasks. The HD linkages have a lifting capacity of 8,500kg and are available on T182 and T202 models. The industrial front axle can be specified on both the N and T Series, and on the T Series it features an option of two brake discs per side.
The T Series is available with either a 5,000kg or 3,500kg liftable front linkage. Both linkages can be fitted together with Aires front axle suspension, and the 3,500kg linkage can also be fitted together with a front loader. When using a front loader, a hydraulics assistant automatically increases engine rpm to help loading work in Direct models.
The new Versu and Direct models are easy to service, providing easy access to daily inspection points. The new models can be most easily identified by their new engine covers and rear mudguards. The new T Series also has a cast-iron frame and separate fuel tank, unlike the previous generation.
The number 2 at the end of the model number refers to the latest, second-generation of the N and T Series, while if the model number is in red the tractor is a Direct and if it is silver, the model is a Versu.
The changes to the exterior are not just cosmetic. The new air vents improve engine cooling, while the new rear mudguards keep the entrance to the cab clean even in the muddiest conditions.
The upgraded cab allows drivers to work long days safely and comfortably. Without gear levers the cab is noticeably more spacious than before. The upper and lower side panels have also been redesigned to make them even more user friendly. Despite the optional automatic air conditioning system, it is now possible to also open the side window.
Production of the new T and N Series Versu models will be phased in during the first half of 2009, while production of T and N Series Direct models will begin in the middle of the year.
