Rotam: Newcomer strengthens armoury against oilseed rape disease

Oilseed rape growers can look forward to a cost-effective new option for disease control this autumn, following the first UK product launch for global crop protection company Rotam.

Toledo, the tebuconazole-based fungicide, is already an established brand in other parts of the world. Its unique higher concentration formulation has been developed to provide an effective alternative for light leaf spot control and growth manipulation in oilseed rape.

“Following extensive recent investment in product registration for the EU market, Toledo is the first of Rotam’s forthcoming range of crop protection products to be made available to UK growers,” Rotam’s Regional Manager for the UK and Northern Europe, Graham Dickinson, said. “Rotam’s independent research aims to deliver new formulations targeted to specific crops, pests and application systems. Toledo’s proven active ingredient has been developed to offer a more highly concentrated fungicide, meaning a lower dose rate per hectare and less packaging to dispose of.

“With its high level of activity and crop safety, Toledo’s key benefits at the autumn spray timing are targeted light leaf spot control and manipulation of the canopy structure, to help ensure the optimum leaf area for light interception as the crop moves into the spring growing season.”

Mr Dickinson added that tighter global supplies of vegetable oil, combined with demand from the biofuel market, were both driving higher prices for OSR, so there was a real opportunity for growers to take advantage of.

“The industry should be viewing OSR as a high-input, high-value earner, rather than a low-cost break from cereals, and attention to detail is essential,” he said.

The optimum timing for Toledo is usually at the beginning of November, with the autumn application window running from early October to mid November. But it is important only to apply the fungicide to actively growing crops, not those that are backward or stressed.
